Tuning

Q: Why should I tune my skis?

A: Tuning your skis is essential for both performance and safety on the mountain. Here's why:

1. Base Flatness:

Over time, your ski base can become convex or concave, depending on your skiing style.

  • Convex: The ski curves outward, making it harder to get on edge and causing a feeling of slipping sideways.

  • Concave (railed): The ski curves inward, making it difficult to twist your skis and initiate turns.

A proper base grind flattens the ski, which restores its natural glide and control.

2. Base Structure:
After flattening, the ski base needs a structure.

  • What is structure? It’s a series of tiny, precise grooves on the P-Tex base. The most common pattern is a diagonal cross-hatch.

  • Why is it important? Structure breaks water tension, allowing your skis to glide smoothly. Without structure, the base would suction to the snow, making it harder to move.

3. Water Tension and Ski Wax:

When you ski, your wax melts a layer of snow, creating a thin layer of water under your skis. A structured base prevents suction on that water, helping you glide effortlessly.

4. Edge Tuning:
For smooth and controlled turns, you need:

  • Base edge: A beveled, smooth base edge helps your ski roll effortlessly from edge to edge.

  • Side edge: Most skis come with a 2-degree side edge bevel.

    • If you enjoy slower, relaxed skiing on green runs, a 1-degree bevel might suit you better.

    • If you're a fan of high-speed turns on groomers, a 3-degree bevel could enhance your performance.

With proper tuning, your skis will perform better, making your skiing experience safer and more enjoyable.
